We shot this 15 second spot at Devou Park in Covington, Kentucky. We were under a tight schedule and were waiting for a dry day. Finally the day arrived, the rain stopped, the bikers assembled and crew arrive up at 8:00 AM.
Everyone showed up on time except for one person: Mr. Sun. The only real choice was to go with it even with the poor lighting conditions. There is something about the even lighting of such a day that has always appealed to me. Sunny days have dramatic lighting, but the high contrast can mean a loss of shadow detail. Not today. Every detail was there, plus I used the Technicolor 5D profile to flatten the image. I was later able to crank up the contrast and saturation in post to compensate.
I used a slider for the Cincinnati skyline shot to add some visual interest. I first had on my medium zoom but it didn’t bring the skyline in up close. So I moved back and compressed the depth of field with the 200mm to bring the Cincinnati skyline closer to the cyclists.
Matt Baker performed the jump. He was going so fast that I had to slow it down to 33% just to be able to see him, otherwise he went by too fast. I used a shutter speed of 1/4000 for the video, knowing ahead of time that I would have to slo-mo the clip and wanted sharp definition. The freeze frame showed I stopped the motion dead. Normally I would like a little wheel spin, but I didn’t want to chance it.
That shot was one take. I had to lay down right next to the path and let Matt Baker jump right next to where I was laying. Good thing for me Matt knows how to ride a bike. I hand-held it rock solid because I did not want to lay there and risk getting run over any more than I had to. This shows you just how much I trust Matt Baker. He is the manager at Reser Bicycle Outfitters, and I trust him with maintaining my BMC.
