This shot was taken as part of my coverage of the 2011 Louisville Ironman. I got some great footage of the event but I was mainly there to shoot stills, or so I thought. When I got there I realized I could only see the event in terms of video, so I learned that about myself. After seeing the world in still shots all of my life, my brain now has been rewired to shoot video. Stills are a point in time, and it takes a special attribute to isolate everything going on and distill it down to a single moment. For that photographers are given too little credit. But now for me that single point in time has expanded greatly in range, this time from 6AM until 12 midnight.
This shot was taken with my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens, with the Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter). I saw the sun going down and grabbed the opportunity. It only took a few seconds to get the lenses put together and on the camera. Since the 200 is a fast 2.8 using the doubler only loses you one stop. Of course hand holding a 400mm is a challenge, particularly when shooting video. That is where the image stabilization comes in, super for stills and helpful for video.
For this photo I took 2 shots, one I focussed on the sunset, the other on the Ironman tent, with 2 different exposures as well. Then I combined the 2 manually in Photoshop to get a HDR look.Read More »
This portrait was done as part of the Join the Fun on a Mountain Bike TV spot I did for Reser Bicycle Outfitters this summer. Young Max was leading the pack coming down the trail and I wanted a closeup still for the commercial. Control of depth of field was important to me as I wanted Max crystal clear and Jason less so, and the pack blurred out enough but still recognizable. Keeping their eyes pointing in the right direction was also key.
While I use the CineStyle color profile for video on the Canon 5D, this was shot in RAW. Of course there was some color matching to do to get it to match the video, but that is no problem, and now I have a great big photo image to use to make prints.Read More »
This was a handheld shot using a 4mp Canon Sure Shot at the Pinnacles of Western Australia. There was no retouching, no computer enhancement, nothing added to this photo. That is true Australia you are looking at. I made a 14 x 20 print and it looks spectacular. Thanks to my cousin Jenni for a great expedition.
